Today I learned that if you want to visit Robben Island it is best to buy tickets ahead of time. Matt, Joe, Liz O, Liz K, Josh, Morgan, Courtney, and I headed to the Robben Island museum early in the morning to try to buy tickets for the 9AM tour, but they were out of tickets. Matt, Joe, Liz O, and Courtney had already bought their tickets, so it was just Morgan, Josh, Liz K, and I that needed to find something to spend a few hours of our time on. We went to see a movie. The Descendants was playing so we bought tickets and went inside. It turns out they assign seats in movies theaters here, which was pretty interesting. Especially since we were the only people in the theater. I had seen the trailer for the movie before and thought it looked funny. But it wasn’t. It was just kind of sad.
After the movie we walked around the mall for a little bit and then headed back to the ship for lunch. We planned to meet up with the others and hike Table Mountain together (minus Morgan) so we could watch the sunset from the top.
It was around 2:30 when we got to the bottom of the trail that would take us up Table Mountain and it was cold at. There was a guy at the bottom of the path that told us that we had to pay him 3 rand each to enter the national park. We didn’t pay him since it was supposed to be a free trail and he didn’t argue. I am pretty sure he was a conman. We had him take a picture for us next to the trailhead before we started walking. The trail was pretty straight uphill, but I had seen worse before. I couldn’t tell if it was raining or if the mist was just really really thing, but we were all completely soaked by the time we reached the top and we couldn’t see anything at all from the top. On the way up the mountain, there were a lot of Lord of the Rings references, so we started to call ourselves the Fellowship of the Ship. I was the Frodo of the group. By the time we reached the top it was obvious that the plan to watch the sunset was not going to work.
There was a restaurant at the top of the mountain where we ate dinner. Then we decided to take a picture at the top before taking the cable car back to the bottom of the mountain. I thought it was a really fun hike, despite being soaked by the end of it. When we got back to the ship everyone was all dressed up and getting ready to go out for the night. But we all decided to change into our pjs and watch the Office in the nook under the stairs. It was kind of fun walking around this ship in pjs while everyone else was wearing heels. I got some funny looks from people, but that’s the way I like it anyway!
