So yesterday my cabin was randomly searched for drugs, alcohol, and other prohibited items. Nothing was confiscated, so I guess I must be clean. The other important things from yesterday was that one of the crew members gave me chocolate, my travel writing teacher told me I am a good writer and read one of my pieces in class, and also I met some people who I am going to meet for breakfast on A days and read through Luke and talk about God!
Today was Neptune day. I was told that we weren’t supposed to know when it was, but everyone did anyway. I woke up early again and was sitting in my hall when the parades went through. The cabin stewards all came running down the halls in costumes similar to togas, banging on drums and symbols, hitting on people’s door and yelling for everyone to get out of bed. I had to stand up and get out of the way because I was afraid I would get trampled. Sotero (my cabin steward) was in the procession too, he looked very excited. Not long after the parade was over the announcer guy came on and started saying piraty things like “Arrgh” and referring to us as “pollywogs.” He did not sound near as excited about it as I think he should have. He was speaking in his usual monotone voice; I would have thought he would have been more excited to sound like a pirate. He told us to go to the 7th deck aft.
The pool deck was already crowded when I got there. I found Matt, Liz and other Liz quickly and stood with them. It wasn’t long before a bunch of the faculty started running around dressed in Greek god costumes. One of the deans showed up dressed as Neptune… At least he wasn’t wearing a shirt and he was painted completely green. They said something about how we had to ask Neptune before we were allowed to cross the equator (which we actually crossed about a week ago, but no matter). Then they started shaving people’s head. I know you were all very worried, but you don’t have to be. I did not shave my hair and it is just as amazing as ever. Matt shaved his head, along with at least five other guys from our hall.
There was also a test that we had to do. This test required having slime poured on our heads, jumping into the pool, and then kissing a fish and “Neptune’s” ring. I felt bad for the fish. He was already dead and then he had to kiss a few hundred college students, poor thing. I spent about ten minutes brushing my teeth afterwards. Even as I am writing this I still feel kind of gross.
After the Neptune day celebration was over I went straight to my room to wash off the fish and the slime. Then I went to lunch. It was taco day today!!!! I had been beginning to think it was a myth. It was SOOOO good!!! And there was chocolate cake, which was also amazing! But anything besides pasta or potatoes seems to taste pretty good. We (Josh, Morgan, Liz, and me) spent most of lunch watching Liz try to guess everyone’s middle names… And their sibling’s names.
Nothing special happened the rest of the day. We had Global Studies discussions where we had to talk about what we wanted to do for our semester papers. The rest of the day I spent on homework and playing cards… Now I am about to go to a seminar that a musician from Ghana is hosting, which sounds pretty cool. Hopefully it is!
When you flush the toilet now, does it spin the other direction?
